Cardiology

Cardiology (from Greek καρδίᾱ kardiā, "heart" and -λογία -logia, "study") is a highly specialized branch of medicine that focuses on the study, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases and disorders related to the heart and the circulatory system.

The scope of cardiology covers a wide range of conditions, including but not limited to:

  1. Congenital heart defects (structural problems of the heart present from birth)
  2. Coronary artery disease (narrowing or blockage of the coronary arteries, often leading to heart attacks)
  3. Heart failure (when the heart is unable to pump blood efficiently)
  4. Valvular heart disease (malfunction of one or more of the heart valves)
  5. Electrophysiology (study and treatment of the heart’s electrical system, including arrhythmias)

Cardiology plays a vital role in preventing, diagnosing, and managing life-threatening heart conditions, often combining medical management, lifestyle recommendations, interventional procedures, and sometimes surgery.

Doctors who specialize in this area are called Cardiologists. They undergo extensive training to provide comprehensive care, ranging from preventive cardiology to advanced interventions, ensuring patients maintain the best possible heart health.
